Solomon Islands has one of the wonders rarely known to the outside world except the few who actually traveled there and marveled at the beauty of its corals and the variety of reef fishes and the marine life it has.
The findings of a coral specialist from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Doctor John Charlie Veron confirmed that Solomon Islands is currently ranked second in the world in the number of coral species discovered so far.
The discovery was made by a team of local and international marine scientists who have carried out a five week research in parts of Solomon Islands last month and have just released their findings.
Dr. Veron said the only place ahead of Solomon Islands with a wider variety of corals is a spot in Indonesia.
Dr. Veron and his team recorded more than 370 coral species over the first five days of their research.
"We didn't expect we'd find the range and the variety of corals we've found. So because of this trip, Solomon Islands has changed from an unknown as far as the coral world is concerned to being the second rated country in the whole world, which is quite amazing,” said Dr. Veron.
With regards to coral reef fish species, Solomon Islands has been rated among what has been described as the "Big Five" for reef fishes in the world.
